Privacy Policy

Claimant does not collect your information: everything you enter stays on your device, and in your own private iCloud account when that device is signed in to iCloud — the developer never sees it. The app does contact two outside services, described below, and neither is run by the developer.

What the app collects

Claimant stores only what you enter, and it stores it on your device. That includes trip details, itineraries, lodging, expenses, receipts and other attachments, and your profile — name, rank, service number, and similar fields.

Three system permissions are used, each only for the feature it names, and each optional:

• Camera — to scan a receipt you choose to add.
• Photo library — to attach a receipt image you select.
• Location — to fill in your current location when you close out a travel leg, so your itinerary builds itself. Turning that position into a place name is done by Apple's location services, which means your coordinates are sent to Apple to be looked up. See What leaves your device below.

Anything captured this way is saved with your trip on your device. You can decline any of these permissions and still use the app. Claimant has no accounts and no developer-operated servers, so none of this is collected by the developer.

What leaves your device

Your trip data stays where you entered it. It is never sent to the developer, who runs no servers and has no way to receive it.

If your device is signed in to iCloud and iCloud Drive is on, Claimant keeps your data in your own private iCloud account instead, so it syncs across your devices. This happens automatically — there is no switch in the app to turn it on or off, and the Settings tab shows you which store is in use. That copy is held under Apple's iCloud terms and your Apple ID settings; the developer has no access to it.

Two things do go out over the network, each prompted by something you did in the app:

• Place lookups and driving distances. When you search for a city, an airport, or a hotel, or let the app fill in where you are, the text you typed — or your coordinates — is sent to Apple's location services to be resolved into a place. And when the app works out the driving distance for a private-vehicle claim, it sends the start and end points to Apple to have the route measured. All of this uses Apple's own mapping and geocoding, built into iOS; the developer neither sees nor receives any of it. Apple's handling of those requests is covered by Apple's privacy policy. If you never search for a place, never ask for a driving distance, and never grant location access, none of it is sent.
• Exchange rates. To convert US dollar amounts to Canadian, the app asks open.er-api.com — a public source that needs no account or key — for the current rate. The request carries none of your information; it asks only for the rate.

Nothing else leaves the device. Your allowances, the nightly rate ceilings, and the claim package the app assembles are all worked out on the phone, and they work with no connection at all.

Third parties

Claimant contains no analytics, no advertising, and no tracking, and it includes no third-party analytics or advertising code. It uses no third-party software libraries of any kind.

The two outside services it reaches are the ones named above: Apple's location services, for place lookup, and open.er-api.com, for exchange rates. Nothing else is shared with anyone.

Children

Claimant is intended for adult members of the Canadian Armed Forces. It is not directed at children, and it collects no information from anyone.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the effective date at the top of this page changes with it. There is no mailing list; the version posted here is always the current one.

Not an official government application

Claimant is an independent tool. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or an official application of the Department of National Defence, the Canadian Armed Forces, or the National Joint Council. The figures it produces are estimates governed by the CFTDTI and NJC directives; confirm your final entitlements with your orderly room.
